3 in a Row, Time to Go

No boats, just Florida East Coast Surf Fishing. Canaveral National Seashore, Mosquito Lagoon, Florida.

The surf was pretty rough yesterday at Patrick Air Base 2nd Light and at Canaveral National Seashore. We ended up throwing in Mosquito Lagoon.

It wound up being a beautiful day with most of the weather blowing inland.

Fish Report 8-17-2019 Florida East Coast Surf Fishing

No boats, just Florida East Coast Surf Fishing. Canaveral National Seashore, Playalinda Beach, Eddy Creek Fish Report for 8-17-2019.

The surf has progressively gotten muddy throughout August 2019. Very few keepers in Playalinda Beach but a lot more little guys. A nurse shark was caught today at the Eddy Creek ramp but Croakers and spots were everywhere.

What's biting?

The Redfish are biting at Mosquito Lagoon.

Crabs are picking the bait clean at Haulover Canal, and the Jetty Park bite was nonexistent.

The Jetty Park Pier was busy with fishermen but light on bite.

Croakers to the Left of Me, Croakers to the Right, Redfish to End the Day

No boats, just Florida East Coast Surf Fishing. Canaveral National Seashore, Playalinda Beach, Eddy Creek, Jetty Park, Haulover Canal, Mosquito Lagoon. Croaker, Spots, Saltwater Catfish, Redfish, Skate, Nurse Shark.

Okuma Coronado CD65 and CD90 and Mitchell Avocet II reels, H2O Express 12 ft rods, 30lb braid with 20lb mono backer, Eagle Claw 2/0 circle hooks, 3oz. pyramid weights, Fish Bites bait.

We jumped around moving from place to place today Florida East Coast Surf Fishing. Between the beautiful sunrise, spots of rain, change of scenery, species of fish, and catches of the day, we had great fishing fun. We started at Canaveral National Seashore Playalinda Beach Eddy Creek Parking Area and walked up the ramp toward the beach to a beautiful sunrise! The bite was slow and water muddy so we moved to Jetty Park at Port Canaveral. Again, slow, slow bite. We drove out to Haulover Canal and forgot we only had the long poles, so we went to Mosquito Lagoon and bingo! Redfish!

Why I Prefer to Use Circle Hooks

Why I Prefer to Use Circle Hooks

The use of circle hooks is also recommended by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. My FWC states that circle hooks are 90% more likely to hook fish in the mouth, reducing harm to the fish on a catch and release.

Circle hooks are easier to dislodge than J hooks. If a fish "swallows the hook" with a J, removing it can be seriously detrimental to a fishes release. Often, it is better to cut the line close and leave the hook to work out over time if damage to the fish on removal is severe or it takes too long and causes distress.

Circle and J hooks are for use with live and cut bait. The favorite thing I like about the circle hook is they set themselves. You never have to set the hook. It makes Florida East Coast Surf Fishing easier.

Circle hook sizes go from 1/0 on up, depending on what your fishing for. You even have a choice of colors like Chrome, Red, Black, or Gold. A plethora of sizes, colors, brands, styles, manufacturers for you to choose from. I normally use 1-2/0 for Whiting, Redfish, and Pompano but use 3-4/0 for larger species like shark.

Safety Surf Fishing Florida's East Coast

When I go surf fishing, I like a place to get out of the sun for a minute or two. A small beach umbrella is useful for this but they tend to fly off if not properly secured. I secure my beach umbrella with something called a beach screw. Mine is Anchor Away. It attaches right to the beach umbrella.

Using buckets of sand helps hold canopy tents still. When the family includes little guys, a canopy style tent allows for more play space while keeping the sun at bay. I will be doing a new video this weekend for tips to set up a safe canopy style tent on the beach. I will link it here after the upload.

I have found that as soon as beachgoers see lightning, storms incoming, or hear thunder, they are potential lightning strike targets. Be sure to check behind you periodically for incoming storms. They tend to creep up on you. Don't wait for the rain to begin before you head to the car, a beach umbrella is not a safety shelter from lightning and storms. They only work as a sun shade.

Waterspouts are basically tornados over the water. I have seen many waterspouts but have not seen one come back off the water onto the beach. According to NOAA, if a waterspout reenters the beach, a tornado warning occurs.

Watch your step as you soak your feet where the surf meets the sand. Jellyfish, hooks, idiots who bring glass containers to the beach, skates (rays), holes previously dug by sand creators all can be problematic for the unaware while surf fishing Florida's east coast.

Never swim alone, alcohol and the sun do not mix well, dehydration is a thing, wear sunscreen, and if you brought it, take it back with you.
